France’s Loss, Israel’s Gain

November 9, 2005

The French are in denial about their Muslim immigrants, and have been for some time. French Jews have experienced Muslim anti-semitism at first hand and a small but growing number have been escaping to Israel. If, as seems likely, France appeases the rioters the exodus will swell.

What riots (WSJ subscription)

Pictures of the worst urban violence in France since World War II are capturing the world’s imagination. Only the French themselves aren’t necessarily watching the same thing as the rest of the planet.

The country’s largest private television network, TF1, refrains from airing footage of burning cars or buildings. “We know that it’s the type of thing that provokes contagion,” Robert Namias, the head of the station’s news division, told the Journal yesterday. He added that the government hadn’t tried to influence its editorial decisions.

The state-owned television channels, France 2 and France 3, have stopped reporting on the number of cars torched by rioting young immigrants every night. “Do we have to exercise self-censorship, to exercise censorship? Must we show everything, explain everything?

The answer to the last question is “Yes!” – refusal to confront bad news has led the French to ignore anti-semitic violence (my emphasis):

Some 1,000 acts of anti-Semitic violence were recorded in France in 2004, a fifteen-fold increase over five years.

Examples are attacks on Jewish cemeteries, schools, and people, hat tip IDF Israel. So an increasing number of Jews have been fleeing France (my ellipsis):

(One young French Jew) is part of the growing exodus of French Jews leaving for Israel.

“As a Jew I don’t see any future for me in France,” he said. “Just put on a skull cap in the street and see the reaction you get.

In a few weeks he will leave this office for the last time, pack his bags and head for Haifa university to study aeronautics.

At the weekend’s anti-(Iraq) war demonstrations it was noticeable how many protesters sang anti-Israeli songs, while just a few weeks ago a liberal Rabbi in Paris was stabbed and had his car set on fire for reasons which remain obscure.

Only a few thousand a year are leaving, but trading one aeronautics engineer for a bunch of unemployable Muslims has to be a bad deal for France.

Going forward, if the French government now appeases the rioters, they will become more violent and many more Jews will leave. That’s France’s loss and Israel’s gain.

Israel’s Fence

November 9, 2005

Nations under assault either crumble or get stronger, and Israel is in the latter category. It has developed excellent anti-terror technology that the US should use to secure its Mexican border.

The Assault

Israelis face a barbaric enemy that continues to plumb new depths of inhumanity. Here’s a caption in a photo essay by an IDF (Israeli Defense Force) reservist, hat tip LGF:

Here are some shrapnel remains from the Dolphinarium suicide bomber. Most bombs are laden with shrapnel and rat poison, which doesn’t let the blood coagulate so that more civilians will bleed to death.

To de-limb the maximum number of victims, Palestinian suicide bombers detonate when standing. One or more lost limbs causes heavy blood loss, but if you elevate the wound and apply pressure, you’ll likely survive. That’s how a smart and brave Australian woman survived until help arrived after losing both legs below the knee to the 7/7 Kings Cross murderer. If her wounds were contaminated with rat poison, she probably wouldn’t have made it.

(So the London bombers probably weren’t armed by Palestinian terrorists, but no doubt the next lot will use the rat poison trick.)

Israel’s Security Fence

Walling these monsters off with the Security Fence prevents direct fire, and eventually the high-energy laser defenses will stop their missiles and mortars.

But suicide bombers kill the most Israelis, so the Fence’s biggest role is preventing infiltration. It’s heavily instrumented and monitored (the monitoring center is are alerted to an attempted intrusion by the theme from Queen’s Another One Bites the Dust, and the CCTV zooms in on the intrusion).

Even partially completed, the Fence is highly effective:

A comparison of the number of attacks within Israel carried out by Samaria-based terrorists after the anti-terrorist fence was built, and the number of attacks carried out by the same terrorist groups before the building of the fence, reveals a drop of some 90 percent in the ability of these terrorist groups to perpetrate attacks within Israel.

In the 11 months between the erection of the first segment at the beginning of August 2003 and the end of June 2004, the Samaria-based terrorist groups have succeeded in carrying out only three atrocities within Israel. All three occurred in the first half of 2003, during which 26 Israelis were murdered and 76 wounded. (In two of the cases, the terrorists infiltrated via areas in Samaria where the fence was not yet completed. In the third, a female terrorist entered through the Barta’a crossing using a Jordanian passport.)

In contrast, during the 34 months from the beginning of the violence in September 2000 until the construction of the first continuous segment of the anti-terrorist fence at the end of July 2003, between Salem and Elkana in Samaria, Samaria-based terrorists carried out 73 atrocities (suicide bombings, shootings, car bombings) within Israel (including Jerusalem) in which 293 Israelis were killed and 1950 wounded.

Now the Russians are talking about buying the Fence technology to wall off Chechnya:

The Russian government is mulling the construction of a security barrier along the border with Chechnya similar to Israel’s West Bank security fence as part of its efforts to combat Muslim terror, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

The US could do worse than get Israeli help to secure the Mexican border.
