Cock-Ups (2)

Those depressed by the apparent incompetence of the Brit armed forces can comfort themselves it’s common at the start of a war, and the US is almost as bad. The good news is that, having tried all the alternatives, we end up winning.

The hostage situation is farcical. The destroyer captain left his men and woman unprotected, the 14 man/1 woman boarding party seems to have been “arrested” by just 4 Iranians in two boats, the Brits put up no resistance because of claimed UN RoE, the Brit female sailor put in harm’s way is the mother of a 3 year old kid, the Brits didn’t ask nearby US forces for support, and the captives have been oddly compliant in making dishonest propaganda broadcasts.

Students of WW2 will recognize this – we all learned in history abaout the disaster at Dunkirk, but those against the Japanese were far more shaming. Here’s Anthony Weller in First in to Nagasaki (p287, hardcover):

The litany of early military disasters added up to astonishing numbers. In a mere 6 months the Japanese, at a cost of only 15,000 of their own men (deaths and casualties), took 320,000 Allied soldiers out of the war, either as deaths, casualties, or prisoners…

The Iranians might reflect that this great Japanese victory led to the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, not to mention the burning of their other 50 major cities.
