Firefox v Opera Update

Yesterday’s Firefox update (2.006) has halved its propensity to hog CPU, but it’s still way too high.

Prior to 2.006, Firefox with 19 tabs open was eating about 60% of a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo, while Opera with the same workload was eating just 2%.

Firefox 2.006 has cut the CPU load 60% to 30% – just acceptable if you have a powerful processor.

When I was a young man, we could support 10,000 users on something as powerful as a Core 2 Duo, and still have spare CPU etc etc…

Gandalf – I forget, which OS are you using? I have Firefox running under Windows at work and Ubuntu Linux at home, and while it can start eating up cycles if left running for a while, if I restart it once a day it’s fine.

Try disabling your extensions and checking CPU. If that’s not it, then it’s something crazy about one of those pages.

    Thanks!

    I’m running WinXP Pro.

Will try running in safe mode to see if it’s an extension problem.
